company supplied bouncers for local bars—including one called Blue Rock Resort in Baloy Beach, frequented by Dave Smith—and security for a Sea World-type aquatic animal park called Ocean Adventure. Nash had a reputation as a particular kind of problem solver—“He was known for placing his pistol on the table at the beginning of a negotiation,” one acquaintance said—and spoke five Filipino dialects fluently.

At around 2 P.M., the group departed from lunch, Jones and his wife in their gray Mitsubishi Lancer, their toddler in the backseat, with Nash following a few minutes behind. They planned to meet up again at the nearby Mountain Clark Firing Range, where Nash was a regular.

As Jones turned down a narrow residential road, one hundred feet from the entrance to the gun range, a red Honda XRM motor- cycle pulled up behind him, carrying two men in helmets riding in tandem. The man on the back leaped off, approached the car, pulled out a handgun, and fired into the driver's side window. The gunman then climbed back on the motorcycle, and the men sped off.

Jones was hit multiple times. One bullet passed through his body and struck Maricel in the back. He fell over on top of her, vomiting blood. Maricel froze, terrified, and then opened the door and climbed out. She frantically called Nash, who raced down the road to where Jones’s Lancer idled. He pulled Maricel and her son into his car and drove to the hospital. The baby was unhurt, and doctors were able to stabilize Maricel. Jones died slumped across the passenger’s seat, his wife’s shoes still on the floor next to him.
