events to me, in which the Hahns were only partly scammed and stole the rest, or were entirely scammed and stole nothing. The most definitive account I received came from Mathew Smith, but even he seemed unsure of all of the details. The facts that I have confirmed include:

• That over $1 million of Le Roux’s money went missing. (One source with knowledge of the situation told me the amount was $1.1 million. Le Roux later claimed that only $800,000 was stolen by the Hahns, but at the time he said that “Steve is short $1.4 or 1.5M.”)

• That Le Roux sent mercenaries to Bulawayo and Livingston and Lusaka, Zambia, to investigate the losses, blamed the Hahns for the losses, and demanded that they repay him.

• That Le Roux ordered drugs planted on Andrew Hahn, for which he was imprisoned.

• That Joseph Hunter later shot Steve Hahn in the hand in Bulawayo, on the orders of Dave Smith or Le Roux himself.

My sources for this account include interviews with Mathew Smith, Lach- lan McConnell, Tim Vamvakias, an anonymous American security contractor who participated in the hunt for the Hahns, an anonymous family member of Le Roux’s who was familiar with it, an investigative account from one of Le Roux’s mercenaries, chats between Mathew Smith and Le Roux, and USA v. Hunter, Documents 524, 576, 580, 581, 585, 591, 606, March/April 2018. Steven Hahn declined my request for an interview.

108 moving into a shared house: Details from interviews with Felix Klaussen. Joseph Hunter declined my requests for an interview, sent directly and through a relative. My communications with Chris De Meyer are described later in the book, but other than admitting he had lived in Subic and once known Klaussen, he declined to speak to me about the facts outlined here.

108 grown up in extreme poverty: Details of Hunter’s early life, family life, and military service derive, unless noted, from USA v. Hunter, Documents 305-1 through 305-7, April 22, 2016.

108 a friend in his unit was killed: Ibid. See also the 75th Ranger Regiment page on Facebook, July 30, 2012: “On this date July 30, 1986, Pfc. Michael D. Rudess, assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment as Pla- toon RTO, died of injuries sustained while conducting a combat live fire train- ing exercise at Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah.”

108 National Defense Service Medal and a Global War on Terrorism Medal: Service history for Joseph Manuel Hunter, obtained from U.S. Army head- quarters on April 15, 2016.

109 hired and then quickly fired by Blackwater: Interview with Tim Vamvakias.

111 Smith came up with an alternative plan: I heard three different versions of who designed this plan. A former call center manager who was close to Nestor Del Rosario, Le Roux’s Filipino lieutenant, told me that Del Rosario had come
