show Le Roux's name vanishing from listings, replaced by the likes of Robson Tandanayi and Edgar van Tonder.

127 sell off any Manila properties . . . scout for an island: This included the two penthouses that Le Roux owned in Salcedo Park Towers in Makati City, per an interview with the anonymous call center manager who was close with Del Rosario.

CHAPTER 14

130 Thanks to social networking: Many of the social media examples named here have been taken down over the last several years. All of them were viewed by me and saved as screenshots in my files.

130 collapsing the ruse: In one such case, Asaf Shoshana, an Israeli employee, linked to his own fake profile as "Joe Anderson," the profile photo for which was an image of Al Pacino from the movie Scarface.

131 policeman named Marcus: This is the same Marcus described in Chapter 6.

131 part of a sting operation: "I don't know if you are a Fed or what," one military contractor and former American soldier told me when I first contacted him.

133 article about the mysterious call centers: Shay Aspril, "An Invitation from Tel Aviv, a Prescription from the Internet, a Drug from America," Calcalist, July 28, 2011.

133 Mathew: As noted in Chapter 7, I am using "Mathew" to identify him in most cases, in order to avoid confusion with Le Roux's enforcer, Dave Smith, to whom Mathew Smith was not related.

136 transcripts of chats: All quotes derive directly from these chats.

138 an article written by him for some travel magazine: The relative could re- member only that the article concerned the Alps, began with a train ride, and was written under a pseudonym. I was never able to locate it.

138 on behalf of mysterious "Brazilians": While Le Roux did conduct drug transactions with Brazilians, according to a former employee familiar with them, I never encountered any evidence that his money laundering was done on behalf of anyone but himself.

142 "I had to kill my father": The actual role of Le Roux's biological father, Dar- roll Hornbuckle, in his business was a mystery I was never able to solve to my satisfaction. DEA agents and Le Roux's relatives confirmed that Hornbuckle was indeed Le Roux's relation, but were all unclear on to what extent he'd reentered Le Roux's life. Hornbuckle was certainly involved in the online pre- scription pill business. His name appears connected to both Le Roux's web- sites and others, including one that was later prosecuted in Louisiana called ecaremd.com (Hornbuckle, however, was not accused in the case). Several employees told me—without realizing that Hornbuckle was Le Roux's father—that Hornbuckle had been one of the company's affiliates, that he and Le Roux had fallen out, and that Le Roux had cut him out of the business and taken his customers. So it remains entirely plausible that Le Roux had—as he intimated—threatened to kill his own father.
